My name is Anna DeVault and I am a third-year biology major (with a minor in French, alors je parle un peu français). Outside of LIME, I am on the budget committee for Lafayette’s Student Government and I work with the Center for the Integration of Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship to make teaching practices more inclusive on Lafayette’s campus. I also work at an outdoors shop here in Easton and I love being active outside!

Hey everyone!  My name is Stavros and I am from Easton, Pennsylvania, not very far from Lafayette’s campus at all.  I am pursuing a major in Biochemistry, and on campus I serve as a Resident Advisor, tour guide, and a Teaching Assistant for General Biology.  I also do research on an organometallic catalysis project in the chemistry department, in addition to being involved with some music ensembles.  LIME was an absolutely incredible experience, and I feel that the students at the Lycée Andohalo gave me much more than I could have ever given them.  The determination and joy that I witnessed every day while in Madagascar was unbelievable.  Madagascar is a stunningly beautiful country, but it is the passion that the students had that really will remain with me for the rest of my life.  I am happy to answer any questions or simply talk about the LIME program, and I can be contacted at kariofis@lafayette.edu.

Mason Keel

MK

Name: Mason Keel

From: Basking Ridge, NJ

Major: BS Biology

Class of 2018

Although he was not involved with the community as much as he is now at Lafayette, Mason participated in different community service projects during high school, such as assisting the VNA Rummage Sale in Bedminster, NJ. Since coming to Lafayette, Mason has become involved in both one day service opportunities and weekly ones, including Meals at Third Street Alliance.

Mason is ecstatic to be a part of the 2016 LIME team due to his great desire to go abroad and give back to others. His friendships with multiple Malagasy students on campus have only furthered his excitement to travel to Madagascar and be a part of this amazing program.

What is LIME?

LIME is a peer-to-peer mentoring program between Lafayette students and high school students from Madagascar to prepare the latter for the process of applying to colleges in the US.  Ten Lafayette students are chosen each year to participate in the program in which they work with Malagasy students from Lycee Andohalo, a public high school in Antananarivo.  Lafayette students formally commit to mentoring over a 1.5 year period which includes a three week trip to Madagascar in January.  The informal commitment is for a lifetime!

Please view the LIME FAQs page for more information about the program.

Please also contribute to the program so that our Malagasy students can afford to study in the United States. Whether your contribution is large or small, every little bit helps. Please see our donations page for more information.

Congratulations to Clara Randimbiarinanana for being accepted to Lafayette College as a member of the class of 2018. Many thanks to those of you who pitched in to purchase Clara’s plane ticket. Here is Clara arriving at JFK Airport in New York in August 2014, and Prisca greeting her:

We are happy that Clara has joined Rebeka Ramangamihanta (’16) and Prisca Ratsimbazafy (’17) as our pioneering graduates of Lycee Andohalo who were in the first cohort of LIME students.

Who are the Malagasy students in LIME?

Each year, the number of Malagasy students interested in being a part of LIME is increasing! As we get more talented young people, the competition for one of the coveted spots becomes increasingly intense. Although our youngest group of students (LIME 3) had 26 students, only 10 students were invited to participate in the next level (LIME 2). From the LIME 2 cohort, a group of 7 students was chosen to participate in LIME 1 and complete the final stages of the college application process, including filling out the Common Application and taking the SAT and TOEFL. Although we are willing to give advice and help regarding college applications to any interested student, with limited funding at our disposal, only the most promising Lycée Andohalo students can receive intense one-on-one counseling and funding to take the necessary tests and submit applications to be considered for American universities.
