Perchlorate

Remediation of Perchlorate Pollution

This project explores multiple facets of the treatment of Perchlorate, a harmful contaminant found in water resources across the United States that is known to adversely affect the human endocrine system.  From collection and removal in the environment using an advanced ion exchange resin, to destruction via bacterial reduction, the entire process of remediation is studied in this joint venture between the Civil and Chemical Engineering disciplines.  Students interested in environmental research with a focus on chemistry and chemical processes would benefit through their involvement in this project.  Experimental assistance is needed with resin creation, testing, and regeneration, as well as analytical assistance utilizing laboratory equipment such as the Ion Chromatograph.
