Extracting Pigments from Acid Mine Drainage

SEES member Michael Ryan ’15 is developing a new way to treat rivers and streams contaminated with coal mine discharge.  The new process eliminates waste sludge produced and instead yields iron oxide powders for use in paints and pigments.  The project started as an idea that became a reality through support from SEES and the EXCEL program.
