Composting is growing fast here at Lafayette! Thanks to the efforts of Jenn Bell, SEES won a major grant from the PA Department of Environmental Protection to implement a campus-wide composting system for more sustainable waste management. In the spring of 2010, Lafayette installed 2 Earth Tubs in order to handle all of the organic waste that was being pulped in the dining halls. A very generous grant from the Ludwick Family Foundation has been vital in constructing a temporary site for the in-vessel composting units.
Also, the nitrogen cycle in the compost has been studied since the birth of the composting program in 2007. Mickey Adelman ’10 started the project and wrote his honors thesis on the subject.
