Donate your extra veggies!

Hi all! Here’s a message from Nickie Rojo about produce donations to Safe Harbor:

Hi everyone! Thank you to the person or persons who filled the Safe Harbor basket with zucchini and cukes! I really appreciate you getting the ball rolling! Thank you to everyone in advance for all of your veggie donations and for signing up to deliver. If everyone could sign up for one day, I think we can fill the rest of July and August. Safe Harbor would like to receive the donations between 1 and 3 pm so it doesn’t coincide with their lunch schedule. The woman in charge there is Annie. I am going to put a sign up sheet on the wall inside the shed at the garden. That way everyone will have access to it. Let me know if there are questions or concerns, and thanks again for your efforts!

NO GARDEN HOSES!

Watering hoses are NOT ALLOWED at the garden!

Apparently word is not getting out to many users of the garden by email, and folks do not seem to understand that we have a very limited supply of water. Since June 15 we have had only 0.15 inches of rain – our rainwater tanks will empty quickly when people are hosing down their plots with little regard for the drought or the needs of other gardeners. We have already run out of water once and it will probably happen again.

Use a watering can and apply no more than you need. Mulch will also help reduce soil evaporation and thereby cut down on your need to water frequently.

Organic Compost Source

Community Gardeners,

Thanks  to Sharon Bright’s recommendation, we now have a source of organic compost sold in bulk:

Cierech Greenhouses
23 Winters Rd, Phillipsburg, NJ 08865
(908) 859-1899

The cost is $30 per yard (and a dump truck holds about 8 yards). The only downside is that they do not deliver, so we need to find someone with a truck.
Contact Mike Jordan if you’re interested!

The Community Garden on TV?!

Hey all,

Two exciting things:  the garden project has been covered by local TV shows twice this year!
On Monday, April 12th at 8:30PM we’ll be on channel WFMZ 69 on the Navigating your Life show.  Myself, Mickey Adelman, Professor Veshosky, and Jason Seigel were interviewed for the Going Green Earth Day special.

On Earth Day, April 22nd, we’ll be on the show Tempo at 7 :30 and 11:00PM on PBS channel 39.  Professor Wilson and I were interviewed and Bryan Hendrickson helped out too.

Memories from 2009 :)

This beautiful collage was made by Denise Galarza Sepúlveda (in plots #28 and 29). She tried to include an image from every garden space in the 2009 season.  Click on the image to enlarge it.
