Vacation and Transportation of the Future (Kayla Zola)

Kayla,
I thought you did a really nice job of integrating concepts from class into your video and in using them to explain the futuristic vision of the car. I enjoyed learning about the “car-boat”, but I think it would have been interesting to expand on a few points. More specifically, you introduced the car boat by discussing how the mass production of the Model T led to heavy traffic congestion. You described the car-boat as being a method of “escape”. Whether this choice in language was intentional or not, it still introduces a very interesting contrast between utopian vs. dystopian visions of the future. Typically, I associate an “escape” with a dystopian view of the future, yet the 1920’s were a time of prosperity and, as you mentioned, the views of the future were very utopian-based. If you were to amend this (already great) video, I would love to hear more about this contrast-is it meaningful?
Kayla, I really enjoyed your slidecast! I liked how you laid out what you were going to say before you started. Sometimes, you talked a little too fast, but the slidecast flowed nicely. I have never heard of the car boat, but I found it a very interesting and maybe even viable idea. I like how you expressed that this two in one design showed how Americans value efficiency. One time, I was at my lakehouse and there was a car that actually drove into the lake, sort of like a car boat! I also enjoyed that you showed how family and gender norms played a role in these images of future transportation. You did a great job connecting the ideas expressed to topics and ideas we have discussed in class. The only other suggestion that I would have is to maybe do a little bit more of a conclusion or summary on the last few slides. I thought this topic was very interesting, and I think you did an awesome job selecting images that were relevant. Nice work!
