Google vs. Viacom

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which has been discussed at various points throughout the semester, has recently played a key role in the ongoing legal battle between major companies Google and Viacom. Viacom’s claim is that Google is guilty of copyright infringement, with Youtube.com containing clips of many Viacom shows that were posted without permission. It seems however that Google has won a major victory in this struggle, for a U.S. District Judge has ruled that the “safe harbor” provisions of the Copyright Act protects Youtube videos in this circumstance. It is unclear if the issue is finally settled once and for all, but it seems that, for the time being, Google has the upper hand in this drawn-out power struggle.

Copyright School

After watching the youtube videos in class on tuesday, I became curious about YouTube’s copyright policies. I have seen videos taken down before because of copyright infringement, but never really thought about what happened to the YouTube user who put theĀ contentĀ up. According to an article on Politico, If a Youtube recieves a copyright notification about a user’s video then not only will the the video be blocks but the user will have to complete “YouTube Copyright School”.

What is “YouTube Copyright School”? This video:

Not surprisingly this video has over 3 million views. It has a lot of down ratings and comments have been disabled. After you watch the video you have to pass a quiz to prove that you understand copyright law. If you pass the quiz then you can remove the strike from your account.

What do you think of YouTube Copyright School? Is it the right approach?

Youtube is terrible

So, I’m trying to get some study music off of youtube and I really felt like listening to Caparezza, an Italian artist. So youtube kept giving me a “This video has been blocked in your Country” message. Finally out of annoyance I went on the Italian language google page and still same thing.

I thought the whole purpose of Youtube and of the internet in general was to broaden the cultural horizons of the global population, so that as a global community people can share thoughts and ideas across borders. apparently this doesn’t apply to music.
