For this portfolio Tim and I decided to use the case of Sony Picture v. The Faulkner Estate. In “Midnight in Paris” Owen Wilson uses a variation of a Willima Faulkner quote. The estate is suing Sony fro using the quote without permission. Owen Wilson also misquoted all of nine words in the quote. The case does not sound like it will hold up in court and personally I do not think the Faulkner Estate will win. If anything this is a case of plagarism, which as we hav learned, is an issue of ethics and not actually a legal offense.

I chose to look at the economic implications of not having copyright laws. The laws protect not only the authors but the publishing industry as well. The governments that are part of the WIPO treaties protect their authors and the governments see large profits from international trade. There are so many jobs that would be lost if the copyright laws did not exist so it is beneficial to multiple groups of people.
