Fun advice, perhaps most helpful for those who don’t bring their kids into the world at the same time they’re doing a Ph.D.
The Toddler’s Guide to Doing a PhD (The Thesis Whisperer)
First, though, a word of disagreement: Be careful with the advice that, “when you are doing your literature review, it helps to allow yourself to wander a bit.” Most Ph.D. students are perfectly adept at wandering. Remember: It is important to stop wandering after a while and to start looking for a way out of the woods.
The advice to be unabashed in asking for help? That’s very good advice. It is easy to get lost while trying to figure things out yourself. Again, that kind of wandering will happen naturally, and it’s good to do it. Still, don’t be afraid to yell from inside the maze every once in a while to ask if there’s any advice that those looking on from above might be able to provide.
The name of the blog indicates that there is additional useful advice for Ph.D. students. Maybe I’ll wander back there someday.
