I just realized this also! I’ve taken many religious studies classes and took Theology in high school where one assignment was just finding the origin of the word. I kept trying to make sense of everyone’s names within Children of Men to see if there were any other religious references I was forgetting but so far none that I can really think of.
I think this is such a key point that we didn’t catch in class. He can also be seen as Jesus as he sacrifices himself for the prosperity of humanity. His sacrifice was for both a literal and figurative human rebirth.
