  1. Your introduction is clear and sets up the rest of the slidecast well. I like how you set up the fact that these smart homes are not truly labor saving at the very beginning of the slidecast. It sets the tone nicely. Your discussion of the energy systems that smart homes rely on is very interesting as well. It shows how systems of technologies are affected by other systems. Good job connecting your project to one of the broader themes of the class by creating a separate slide for clearly listing the values of the smart home. You also did a really good job of describing how the smart home’s mechanisms work and how the smart home is a system of smaller technologies. One suggestion I have would be to go a little more in depth on the development of the smart home throughout history and how values of various time periods affected its development. Overall, you did a great job. I enjoyed watching this slidecast, and I learned a lot from it!

  2. Erin,

The smart home is an interesting technology to take a look at; you do a great job at introducing the topic and laying out the direction your discussion takes. You do a great job at incorporating class concepts; particularly this does a fantastic job at showcasing technologies as part of broader, complex systems. I like how you talk about monitoring technologies, and how they have developed from existing heating and cooling systems, but how did those systems develop? I think here you could have gone a little more into how these technologies developed on a broader historical timescale, say 1000 years as opposed to 100.

Its interesting to think about how it seems like the “smart home” has been fantasized about for the better part of a century. I think you do a great job at projecting out a future for the smart home from today, but it might have been interesting to look at past views of the future smart home and compare them to what you describe. How are societal values different now from then?

Overall I really enjoyed your slide cast and the context you provide around the modern smart home; Great job!

  3. Erin,

Very interesting slidecast! I thought your historical connection to “Less Work For Mother” was an interesting point- smart homes are marketed for energy savings and convenience, but having to make tons of adjustments on many different apps may not be more convenient. I also though the explanation of what exactly a smart home is was very useful, as it is a concept that we talk about often but assume everyone knows exactly what it is. With that said, I think it would have been interesting to expand the historical context of smart homes slightly-I felt like I got a lot of information on what a smart home is but not as much historical context. It would have been interesting to include past and current evolving policies that have supported reducing greenhouse gas emissions of living more sustainability and therefore helped to create a market for these kinds of technologies. Overall, a very interesting video!
