I think that this portfolio may come across as quite contradictory. In my blog posts, I express how I love reading physical books and prefer them to eBooks, but then in my essay I talk about how important and beneficial eBooks are in today’s world. So, I find myself in an interesting predicament. While I find myself preferring physical books, I realize that I can’t continue denying eBooks of their importance. I am always putting eBooks down and only choosing to see their negative aspects. Upon starting this portfolio, I realized that I need to learn to be more open-minded towards eBooks as technology continues to rapidly change, so I thought, “what better way to do that than to write an essay focusing solely on their benefits and importance?”

As more weeks continue to pass by, I find myself better understanding copyright, and the possible pros and cons attributed to it. Until recently, I had never considered the different and specific cases for deciding copyright infringement. I had always simply and blindly assumed that copyright was a good thing while never really exploring how it is relevant today or even in my own life. The following journal entries and essay discuss how copyright is relevant today while also examining it from different aspects. Through my research I have been left without a clear-cut answer as to whether I am purely a “copyright optimist” or a “copyright pessimist”. These past few weeks have showed me that it often depends on the case. As my essay will show, sometimes cases are more complicated, making it harder to come up with a precise, overall answer.

Before this class, I never really considered the importance of copyright and property laws. I also never considered the history of books themselves. Technology is rapidly advancing and it is crazy to think that an item such as paper can today be seen as obsolete. In the following three blog posts I reflect on facts that I recently discovered through this class, ones that I had never even thought about before.
“What if” seems to be a powerful beginning to a question with infinite possible answers. It is hard to imagine a world without copyright for copyright is something many take for granted. However, just like anything in the world, copyright has a history, and was created for a reason. One must remember that there was once a time when the world didn’t have copyright and although the world then was much simpler than it is now, copyright still proved to be important. For my essay, I decided to consider, “what if copyright never existed in the film industry?” A complete movie geek, I wanted to examine the pros and cons of the film industry sans copyright.
