Jack Daniels (yeah the whiskey) Doesn’t sue over copyright violations. This seems to go so far against the norm of what we have been discussing in class since it would seem that infringement earns the guilty party an immediate lawsuit, especially in the American legal system whee lawyers are looking to establish clearer copyright precedents by pushing their cases as far as they will go.
Instead Jack Daniels writes a kind and polite letter letting the guilty party know that they are in violation and a request is made for the guilty party to change whatever they are doing. Here is an example in which a politician used his name on a logo similar to the Jack Daniels logo. Jack Daniels requested he change the logo when the book was reprinted and even offered monetary assistance if he wished to change the logo in violation sooner rather than at reprinting.
I think it was mature that Jack Daniels doesn’t sue guilty parties right away. It gives them a warning instead of getting them in trouble. I think a lot of the times lawyers will push a case as far as it can go so they will make more money. Sadly, America is run by money, so the more money people can make, the more complicated a situation gets.
Jack Daniels is awesome for doing that. Seeing cases like that make me want to buy their product! (once i turn 21 of corse) The best part was that their corporation even said they would help pay some of the costs to have the label changed sooner than later. Thats classy.
i think that by being polite about the situation, Jack Daniels is making themselves look more attractive to prospective customers. People like to associate themselves with brands that have good reputations.
Jack Daniels is definitely doing what is in it’s best interest. A big part of the success of a company is having a relationship with your consumers; although this seems to have gone by the wayside recently, taken over by money hungry attitudes, it is a nice reminder of how things used to be. I definitely respect Jack Daniels for realizing that they have enough money as it is and do not need to benefit monetarily off of little things. This is a good example of the integrity that needs to re-enter society esp. in the business world.
