On Tuesday, when we looked at the art books, I started with the impression that “an artbook” was “a book which contained art.” For the most part, that idea wasn’t wrong, but it also wasn’t correct. I was actually someone surprised that they were instead “books which were art” alongside “books which contained art.”
Before, pop up books, shaped books, and illustrated books only seemed to me as things that could only be children’s books, as a method to keep attention. But as I remembered, art could be appreciated by anyone, and all the books we saw proved that.
I never thought that books such as pop up books could be geared towards more of an adult audience either. I think it is interesting how people tend to assume that if a book is pop up, it is for children. In reality, pop up books are just ways of further engaging the reader in text, whether that reader is an adult or not.
When we first discussed the artist book class day I thought we would be looking at books geared towards children.
I think it is interesting how many people just assumed we would be looking at children’s books on Tuesday. I, also, assumed all the books would be aimed at children and I think it is amazing how our creativity has led to such wonderful creations.
