General Body Meeting of 9/27/24: Market Update, Educational Segment, & Buy Pitches

Daniel Colden ‘26 and Andrew Newman ‘26 presented the Market Update on Friday, September 27th. The update covered major indexes and top headlines, including a discussion of the PCE report, which they described as hitting a “sweet spot,” with inflation continuing to remain subdued. They also reported on GDP growth, indicating that the U.S. economy is expected to expand at a steady rate over the next year.

Brynnlan Metchick ‘26 and Hailey Messer ‘26 led an educational segment on the Federal Reserve. Key points included an overview of the three primary entities within the Federal Reserve, tools of monetary policy, and the Federal Funds Rate. They also discussed the implications of the September 2024 meeting and what to expect in terms of mortgage rates, market conditions, the cost of goods, and job creation.

Eric Wang ‘26, Lorenzo Marsili ‘27, and Hudson Pace ‘27 presented a buy pitch for Waste Management. Their investment thesis highlighted the total addressable market, revenue, EBITDA, as well as DCF analysis and Waste Management’s state operations. They emphasized the company’s financial strength, technological advancements, and its diverse network of facilities. The club voted to invest $15,000 in the position.

Eric Wang ‘26, Kathryn Duane ‘26, and Jacqueline Ryan ‘26 presented a buy pitch for Cameco Corporation. Their investment thesis focused on the total addressable market, revenue, market cap, and DCF analysis. They also underscored the significance of the geopolitical climate, noting that Cameco shares mining operations with competitors who have ongoing tensions with the United States. The club voted to invest $20,000 in the position.
