Appendix X. Recognition Procedures for Living Groups, 1992

I. Living Groups other than Fraternities or Sororities.
A. Any group of students who wish to form a living group shall first approach the Associate Dean of Students/Director of Student Life with:
- a list of interested students.
- a proposal outlining specific purpose or interest.
- a request for living space.
- a list of officers.
- a financial proposal for supporting their purpose.
- the names of their advisor(s).
- constitution and by-laws.
B. The Associate Dean will forward this information to the Faculty Committee on Campus Life with a report on the request for recognition as a living groups. The Faculty Committee on Campus Life will review the report of the Dean and will prepare a report which will be sent to Student Government.
C. With the Faculty Committee on Campus Life’s report, the group can then approach Student Government for campus recognition. The Student Government shall have the opportunity to reject the report of the Faculty Committee, thereby granting or denying the opportunity for the group to form.
D. General expectations, such as outlined in the Mission Statement for Fraternities and Sororities, along with the statement of goals and objectives established by the group, will be used to assess continued viability of the living group.
II. Living Groups – Fraternity and Sorority.
A. Any group of students who wish to form a fraternity or sorority shall first advise the Office of the Dean of Students of their intent to form. They must then provide the Dean of Students with the following information:
- a list of interested students
- a specific proposal outlining purpose and/or intent
- a request for living or meeting space
- a proposal for adequate funding for the management of its activity programs
- constitution and by-laws
- the name of a faculty advisor
- a list of officers.
B. The Dean will advise the Faculty Committee on Campus Life of the request for recognition as a living group. The Faculty Committee on Campus Life may review the request and may prepare a recommendation for review by the Faculty and Student Government.
C. Following the opportunity for review by the Committee on Campus Life and Student Government the Dean will submit the request to the Trustee Committee on Athletics and Student Affairs for their information, and, if appropriate, recognition.
