Some Observations of American Society: Things that are Different from my Previous Perceptions

The common impression of Chinese people towards the United States is that it is a prosperous, advanced, free, open, and diverse country, and many people believe that all Americans live a life of affluence and good social order. However, these impressions do not entirely match reality. Although I knew about some of the problems and challenges in American society, such as racial inequality, wealth disparity, gun violence, and others before studying abroad, when I actually came to the United States and experienced it myself, I realized that these issues are much deeper and more complex than I had previously imagined.
Regarding racial inequality, America has a long history of discrimination and segregation, and although progress has been made, these problems have not been fully resolved. I had witnessed firsthand some poor people living in slums or tents, facing problems such as unemployment, hunger, and homelessness. The deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor recently have drawn global attention, exposing the systemic racial discrimination in law enforcement agencies in the United States. In some communities, Black people often face unequal treatment compared to white people, with higher rates of unemployment and poverty. Additionally, there is a certain degree of racial inequality in fields such as education and healthcare, where minorities such as African Americans, Latin, and Native Americans have fewer opportunities and less favorable treatment than white people.
Wealth disparity is also a problem that American society faces. The distribution of income and wealth in the United States is highly unequal, with a large gap between the rich and the poor. According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the poverty rate in the United States in 2020 was 10.5%, with higher rates among minorities such as African Americans, Latin, and Native Americans. In addition, the social security system in the United States is relatively weak, and some low-income families and elderly people face issues with their livelihoods. The United States is the only developed country that has not achieved universal healthcare, and medical insurance is not easily accessible to everyone. Instead, it requires high insurance costs and a percentage of medical expenses. The unequal distribution of educational opportunities is also prevalent in American society. In some communities and areas, there is a lack of educational resources, and children cannot obtain the same educational opportunities. Moreover, the cost of a good education is extremely high, making it a significant barrier for students from low-income families to attend college.
It is essential to note that these issues and challenges are not unique to the United States, but rather prevalent in every society. There is no such thing as a perfect society. The United States is still a vibrant and diverse country that has made significant strides in various fields, including science, technology, education, and entertainment. For example, the United States is home to some of the world’s most prestigious universities, scientific research centers, and a diverse population that fosters creativity and innovation. Moreover, the United States is a country that values individual freedom and democracy. The American system of governance ensures that citizens have the right to express themselves freely, assemble peacefully, and participate in the decision-making process through elections.
In conclusion, while it is true that the United States has some problems to address, it is also a country with many admirable qualities. Its people are innovative and committed to making their society a better place. Despite the challenges, the United States remains a beacon of hope and opportunity for millions of people around the world.
