A memorable cultural exchange experience that I had with someone from a different country was with a local chef in Saint Lucia, one of the Caribbean islands. Saint Lucia has around 180,000 residents living on the island and is a major cruise destination because of the beautiful forests, volcano mud baths, and beaches. We were staying in a town called Soufrière, which is located on the south west coast of the island. The house we were staying in had a private pool and tennis court for us to use. It was located up on a hill on the left side of the town, if you are facing it from the ocean. One night, we had booked dinner reservations at a local 4 star restaurant that had been recommended to us by the owners of the house we were staying at. So we made our way down to the town and into the restaurant. The name of the restaurant was Orlando’s, named after the chef that was running the restaurant. The waiter took us to our table and got us started with water and other drinks that we might have wanted. One of my sisters has an allergy to peanuts, tree nuts and sesame. We notified the waiter of her allergy and she went to go tell the chef, Orlando, so that he knew someone at our table had an allergy. So without telling us, Orlando came out to explain the menu and let my sister know what she should stay away from and what she can eat. After we had gotten our food and eaten, He had come back out to have a pleasant conversation with us. He told us a little about the restaurant and the town that we were in. Telling us about the French and British colonization has played a role in shaping the culture, but still keeping the unique creole culture that the island and its natives has to offer. He told us about what the town was known for, that being the creative architecture, delicious cuisine, and the traditions celebrated by the locals and others. It is also known for the sulphur springs that stink up part of the town and the diamond falls that are a short drive away. After he told us about himself, he asked us about where we were from and where we were staying. Surprisingly he knew the owners of the house that we were staying in and knew exactly what the house was like. We had told him that we were going to play tennis at some point during the time we were there, so we asked him if he wanted to come and play with us one day when he isn’t working and he agreed to come play with us. He played with us for a couple of hours before it was time to take a dip in the pool due to the gorgeous weather. During our time playing with him, we had a really good time playing with him and got to know him a lot better. Overall he was a very nice and wonderful person that we met one random night. Later on in our trip, we ended up going back because of how much we liked the place and needed somewhere to eat anyway. We had another conversation with him, where he asked me when my birthday was and we figured out that we shared the same birthday, which was crazy to think about because we just met him. He gave me a wooden dolphin that had our birthday on it and a card with his email on it so I could send him a happy birthday message on our birthday, which I ended up doing. I learned a lot about the culture of Soufrière and Saint Lucia from Orlando and will definitely be going back sometime in the future.

El delfín de madera: un regalo de Santa Lucía
Una experiencia memorable de intercambio cultural que tuve con alguien de otro país fue con un chef local en Santa Lucía, una de las islas del Caribe. Santa Lucía tiene alrededor de 180,000 residentes que viven en la isla y es un importante destino de cruceros debido a sus hermosos bosques, baños de lodo volcánico y playas. Nos estábamos alojando en un pueblo llamado Soufrière, que se encuentra en la costa suroeste de la isla. La casa en la que nos hospedamos tenía una piscina privada y una cancha de tenis para nuestro uso. Estaba ubicada en una colina en el lado izquierdo del pueblo, si lo miras desde el océano. Una noche, habíamos reservado una cena en un restaurante local de 4 estrellas que nos habían recomendado los dueños de la casa en la que nos alojábamos. Así que nos dirigimos al pueblo y entramos al restaurante. El nombre del restaurante era Orlando’s, llamado así por el chef que dirigía el restaurante. El camarero nos llevó a nuestra mesa y nos ofreció agua y otras bebidas que pudiéramos desear. Una de mis hermanas tiene alergia a los cacahuetes, frutos secos y sésamo. Le notificamos al camarero sobre su alergia y ella fue a decírselo al chef, Orlando, para que supiera que alguien en nuestra mesa tenía una alergia. Así que, sin avisarnos, Orlando salió a explicarnos el menú y le hizo saber a mi hermana qué debía evitar y qué podía comer. Le habíamos dicho que íbamos a jugar tenis en algún momento durante nuestra estancia allí, así que le preguntamos si quería venir a jugar con nosotros un día cuando no estuviera trabajando y él aceptó venir a jugar con nosotros. Jugó con nosotros durante un par de horas antes de que fuera hora de darnos un chapuzón en la piscina debido al hermoso clima. Durante nuestro tiempo jugando con él, nos divertimos mucho jugando con él y lo conocimos mucho mejor. En general, fue una persona muy agradable y maravillosa que conocimos una noche cualquiera. Más tarde, durante nuestro viaje, terminamos regresando porque nos gustó mucho el lugar y necesitábamos un lugar para comer de todos modos. Tuvimos otra conversación con él, donde me preguntó cuándo era mi cumpleaños y descubrimos que compartimos el mismo cumpleaños, lo cual era increíble pensar porque lo acabamos de conocer. Me dio un delfín de madera que tenía nuestro cumpleaños y una tarjeta con su correo electrónico para que pudiera enviarle un mensaje de feliz cumpleaños en nuestro cumpleaños, lo cual terminé haciendo. Aprendí mucho sobre la cultura de Soufrière y Santa Lucía de Orlando y definitivamente volveré en algún momento en el futuro.
