Hyphenated Arts: Integrating Arts and Other Disciplines in the Curriculum and Beyond

Drawing on over thirty years of experience, Professor Jan Cohen-Cruz will speak about integrating the arts, particularly performance, into other disciplines.  Jan’s work has focused on how hyphenated applications of the arts encourage art students to think more broadly about the uses of their métier and for students of other disciplines to see the role the arts can play in moving a broad range of initiatives further, especially when broader participation is a goal. Jan Cohen-Cruz spent five years directing Imagining America: Artists and Scholar in Public Life (IA), a consortium of some 90 colleges and universities  (including Lafayette) focused on the role of the arts, humanities, and design in public scholarship and creative practice. Jan Cohen-Cruz is the 2012 recipient of the Association of Theatre in Higher Education’s Award for Leadership in Community-based Theatre and Civic Engagement.

Exhibitions, Objects, and Interdisciplinary Teaching

Since opening in 2000, the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art
Gallery at Skidmore College has explored the use of college museums as an
interdisciplinary teaching arena in a series of innovative exhibitions developed together by Skidmore faculty and the museum.  These exhibitions have been used by faculty in a surprisingly broad range of disciplines and covered topics such as the history of the Hudson River, the impact of 20th century organic chemistry on daily life, and the
influence of the environment on recent Africa art.  The Tang¹s director, John Weber, will offer an illustrated discussion of the components of successful interdisciplinary museum programming, and how the Tang works with faculty to create it. Prior to his position Directing the Tang Museum, John Weber built an innovative and nationally recognized education program at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

4:10–6:00                   The Anderson Courtyard

A small stage will host a number of interactive performances, concluding with a concert by Baba Brinkman & Jamie Simmonds. Baba and Jamie are rap artists, best known for their award-winning hip-hop shows, including The Rap Guide to Evolution and The Canterbury Tales Remixed. In addition to their performances there will be performances by many members of the Lafayette community, as well as a number of tables displaying a small collection of the creative output that occurs on our campus. Details to follow. If you would like to present or perform, please contact any member of the Arts Advisory Committee.
