A few years ago, I went on a family vacation to Italy, where we visited Rome and Florence. Before the trip, I knew little about modern Italian culture, only Italian history. I learned about ancient Rome’s culture in the Latin classes I took in middle school, and I also learned about Italy’s involvement in World War I in my high school history classes. Since I did not know anything about Italian culture past the early 1900s’, I was not sure what to expect from this vacation. I knew of the stereotypes of Italian culture, for example, Italians eat pasta and drink wine every day, but I did not have a concrete perception before this vacation.
The first thing I noticed from the trip from the airport to the place where we were staying was how scary and aggressive the drivers were. In the United States, certain regions are more known for having aggressive drivers, but in Italy they were much worse. The cars are also a lot smaller in Italy and the roads are not as big. The places we saw in Rome and Florence had a lot more historical architecture, instead of the modern buildings that are seen in the United States. Especially in Florence, preserving art is an important part of Italian culture. There were many museums in the city, and there were beautiful statues in the street as well.
A different part of Italian culture is how meals are structured. Breakfast is not a common meal in Italy; instead, we saw many of the locals order a pastry in the morning, and that was the only food before lunch. We noticed this difference when we went to a cafe, and my siblings and I got a few strange looks when we ordered several different pastries and sandwiches early in the morning. Another cultural difference is that Italians usually do not have many kids. Our family has 5 kids, and when we were at the Italy airport we were asked if we were on a school trip together.
My family vacation changed my perception of Italy by providing me with a firsthand understanding of Italian culture, as I learned about the significance of art, and history, and I am very grateful for the opportunity to have learned about another culture.

Qualche anno fa, ho fatto una vacanza in famiglia in Italia, dove abbiamo visitato Roma e Firenze. Prima del viaggio, sapevo poco sulla cultura italiana moderna, solo storia italiana. Ho imparato della cultura dell’antica Roma nelle lezioni di latino che ho seguito alle scuole medie e anche sull’coinvolgimento dell’Italia nella Prima Guerra Mondiale durante le lezioni di storia delle scuole superiori. Poiché non sapevo nulla sulla cultura italiana dopo i primi del 1900, non ero sicuro di cosa aspettarmi da questa vacanza. Conoscevo solo gli stereotipi della cultura italiana, ad esempio, gli italiani mangiano pasta e bevono vino tutti i giorni, ma non avevo una percezione precisa prima di questa vacanza.
La prima cosa che ho notato dal viaggio dall’aeroporto al luogo dove alloggiavamo era quanto fossero spaventosi e aggressivi i conducenti. Negli Stati Uniti, certe regioni sono più note per avere conducenti aggressivi, ma in Italia erano molto peggio. Le auto sono anche molto più piccole in Italia e le strade non sono così grandi. I posti che abbiamo visto a Roma e Firenze avevano moltissima architettura storica, non come gli edifici moderni che si vedono negli Stati Uniti. Specialmente a Firenze, preservare l’arte è una parte importante della cultura italiana. C’erano molti musei nella città e bellissime statue per le strade.
Un’altra parte della cultura italiana riguarda la struttura dei pasti. La colazione non è un pasto comune in Italia; invece, abbiamo visto molti locali ordinare una pasticceria al mattino, e quella era l’unica cosa che mangiavano prima del pranzo. Abbiamo notato questa differenza quando siamo andati in un bar e io e i miei fratelli abbiamo ricevuto alcuni sguardi strani quando abbiamo ordinato diverse paste e panini presto al mattino. Un’altra differenza culturale è che gli italiani di solito non hanno molti figli. La nostra famiglia ha 5 figli e quando eravamo all’aeroporto in Italia ci hanno chiesto se eravamo in gita scolastica insieme. La mia vacanza in famiglia ha cambiato la mia percezione dell’Italia fornendomi una comprensione diretta della cultura italiana, poiché ho imparato sull’importanza dell’arte e della storia, e sono molto grato per l’opportunità di aver imparato su un’altra cultura.
