Rivers in Film

After learning that the Lord of the Rings had a dam removal scene, I was curious as to whether there were other movies with rivers in them that I never noticed. I found this article on American Rivers that had a list of movies where rivers play a role.

The ones I liked the most were The Good Dinosaur and Pocahontas

Bronx River

I’ve been so close to the Bronx River my whole life, yet never of the existence of a trail that runs alongside it.  I walked the trail with my friends during Thanksgiving break, and it was an interesting experience.  The Bronx River Parkway is a major roadway that’s heavily used, and it’s right next to the river.  Although there was a lot of traffic while we were on the trail, I was easily able to tune out the noise from the cars.  I find it amazing how rivers can so easily create an environment in which we get lost in our thoughts.

Rivers from cracks in sidewalk

Last week on a rainy night I noticed that there are some cracks in the sidewalk on campus that resemble rivers as if you were looking at a river from a plane or on a map. Also, the rain seeps through the cracks which actually makes the connected cracks into mini rivers, which is interesting to think about.

Lafayette’s New River

A rainy day brought to my attention a river on the Lafayette campus. With the heavy rains this past week all of the roads on campus became a river of rainwater and leaves. The river followed the natural slope of the hill, flowing down in the direction of Easton. Like the Delaware, the road-river picked up objects along the way and they got caught in corners around the outside of the bend.

Small plane crash lands in Susquehanna River

Last Friday, a man from Florida was flying his private plane and ran out of fuel. He had to crash land in the river, leaving the plane there. The small plane is still in the river. Hopefully it will be taken out of the river soon or the fuel and other chemicals from the plane might do damage to the water.

River Thames

The River Thames is a river in England that runs through the center of London and flows out to the North Sea. It is considered the cleanest river that runs through a major city. In an effort to keep the river clean and show people how important the river is, the Zoological Society of London developed a virtual reality device that takes you through the river to see the wildlife. The river includes all kinds of creatures like pike, eels, seahorses, bull sharks, grey seals, and even dolphins and whales on occasion. Below the picture is a video about the virtual reality experience of the River Thames.
