I think the movie does a great job in acknowledging womens’ roles in conflicts. Women, as in the movie, are generally used to hide weapons and implant bombs because they draw less suspicion. For the same reason, there has been an increase in female suicide bombers in recent years. Their contributions, however, largely go unnoticed as men are thought to be more involved in conflicts. The movie brings to the forefront such women who put themselves out there and fight for their nations and beliefs alongside their men.
I agree with what you’re stating above. It goes without saying that female roles in films, in addition to reality, have become more prominent. In addition, it should go without saying that females always have a voice, even though they may be kept hidden under that of men. The addition of female roles in this movie provide the movie with a sense of two-dimensionality in that it isn’t just the men doing the work. Women have just as much power as men do, and this movie really acknowledges it.
I believe that the best part of this film is the women who are, in my opinion, the most important characters in the film. Without these women the revolution would have never been possible. And yes, they may not get much attention but half of their power is that they don’t get much attention, which allows them to be so powerful without the harmful effects of the spotlight. These women have made their own voice but it remains more passive because of the times; however, they do fight for their nation. And all of that is scene through this film. In my belief, this movie makes the role of women seem almost more important then the men, and it shows how the men are always in the spotlight whether or not they deserve to be.
This is a great point that Monika made, the women of the revolution barely get noticed even after performing the hardest tasks. It is easy to think that all the men do the planning and acting but it is also easy to think that women do not get involved and just let the men do all the work. But in fact it’s the women carrying out the tasks that get the wheels turning . This isn’t to belittle the men in the revolution, but to make sure that the parts the women played in are heard and made aware of.
I have to agree that the role women play in this film is was so powerful. There was a division between the tasks men performed and the tasks the women performed but both were equally important and necessary. Men and women had to work together to achieve their shared goals.
I completely agree with this. I think it highlights an important aspect of the fight for feminism going on in the world. Women are viewed as weaker and more on the motherly, affectionate side so no one thinks that they could be capable of doing what men do. The fact that Pontecorvo made it a point to show the importance of not only men within this fight but also women and how willing everyone was to help says a lot about the fight that was being fought.
