A Potential Food Supply Collapse Heading Our Way

http://www.naturalnews.com/047654_groundwater_crisis_food_supply_NASA.html

I found this article very interesting because I don’t think many people consider these two topics to be related to one another. This article discusses the global groundwater crisis and how it has the potential to lead to a food supply collapse.

Data obtained form the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) reveal that there, Californians in the Sacramento and San Joaquin river basins have lost approximately 15 cubic kilometers (4 cubic miles) of total water every year since 2011, which is more water than all 38 million Californians combined use on an annual basis for both municipal and domestic purposes.

The cause is our belief that water will always be there, we have begun to take it for granted and now we are about to feel the consequences. Groundwater resides underneath the Earth’s surface, it’s difficult for many to grasp the severity of the situation and become proactive about it because they cannot see it.

EWG App and Website (THIS IS AWESOME!)

http://www.ewg.org/foodnews/press.php

EWG charged today that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has failed to tell Americans , a requirement under federal law ,they have a right to know about the risks of pesticide exposure and ways they can reduce pesticides in their diets. The Environmental Working Group also has an app for your phone where you can scan barcodes of food and see the nutritional value of it as well as other facts about it; the app is called EWG Food Scores. The EPA has not complied in full with the Congressional mandate, for more than a decade EWG has stepped in to fill the void by publishing its Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce. The app is awesome and is aiming to help consumers make healthier, greener food choices. It encompasses more than 80,000 foods, 5,000 ingredients and 1,500 brands. Products are related based on three elements: nutrition, ingredient concerns, and processing and are scored on a scale from 1-10; 1 being the best score.

A “Green” Obama

Obama’s awareness that the environment is one of the few areas where a president can act unilaterally and to broad effect has changed his mind about the environment. Some people are ecstatic with Obama’s sudden change in heart about the environment but the critics aren’t fully convinced of his embrace of climate change as an urgent priority, and insist that some of Obama’s recent efforts are less significant than they appear.

Protein Sources

http://www.naturalnews.com/045683_protein_vegan_lifestyle_vegetarian_diet.html

I liked this article because I have wanted to become a vegan since my senior year in high school and tried it last year but it didn’t work. I was weak and tired and not getting enough protein in my diet so this article was very interesting to me. It is hard for me to get protein through some of the sources usually thought of because of my many food allergies but this article offers a variety of different solutions.
