DKE Hosts Annual Faculty Reception

On Thursday, April 18, the Brothers of the Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon hosted our annual faculty reception.

This event is one we look forward to each spring. DKE welcomed many Lafayette faculty members and administrators to the house to meet the brotherhood while enjoying food and drinks. IMG_1748Our cook, Walt, made several fine dishes including quiesh, a vegetable platter, cheese and crackers, and shrimp, while Sodexo provided an open bar. For many of the guests, it was their first time in the DKE House, so tours were given frequently throughout the reception.
Guests included professors, deans, and members of the President’s cabinet. For the brothers, it was a chance to spend time outside of the classroom with their professors and other administrators.

“It was a great pleasure for the brotherhood to get the opportunity to have more casual conversations with professors and administrators and get to know them better away from the classroom.” President Michael Kelley said.

The event was a huge success and we would like to thank all of those who took time to attend. Although far away, the brothers of DKE are already looking forward to next year’s reception in the hopes of another great event.

Viva la DKE!

DKE Alumni present talk on Law School

On Wednesday, April 3rd, the brothers of the Rho Chapters of Delta Kappa Epsilon, along with the Government and Law Department and the Office of the Dean of the College sponsored a presentation titled “Full Disclosure: Persepctives and Advice on Law School and the Legal Profession.” David W. Kiefer ’95 and Fletcher C. Thomson ’98, both DKE alumni, conducted the presentation and conveyed to aspiring potential law school students the benefits and challenges that come with the legal profession. Kiefer and Thomson provided a detailed insight into their experiences through law school, from the application process to the steps after graduation. Upon completion of the presentation, the students left with a deeper understanding of how to look forward, and approach a potential application to a law school.IMG_1711

This presentation is another example of how the brothers of Delta Kappa Epsilon are attempting to connect with the student body and provide learning experiences for the entire campus.IMG_1725

We would like to thank Brothers Kiefer and Thomson for coming back to present such a detailed and informative lecture.

The 5th Annual Jeremy Saxe Memorial Basketball Tournament

Last Saturday, the brothers of the Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon hosted the 5th Annual Jeremy Saxe Memorial 3v3 Basketball Tournament in the Kamine Gym. Teams spent the week signing up and preparing for either the competitive or noncompetitive bracket, both of which received a large turnout.

The noncompetitive bracket was won by brothers Dan Toutoungi, Andrew O’Brien and Will Brandt, who relied on tenacious defense to win the championship trophy.

The competitive bracket featured several marquee matchups. Lafayette basketball star Tony Johnson teamed up with two members of the Lafayette football team, while Bryce Scott, another member of the basketball team, headlined a team of his own.

The two squads met in the championship game. With a large crowd on hand, the highly competitive game did not disappoint, but in the end, the rookies were no match for Johnson and company. Brothers Michael Kelley, Rob Howe, and Charles Roberts finished in third place.

DKE would like to send a heartfelt thank you to everyone who showed up to participate and to those who worked to make this event possible. An estimated $7000 to $8000 was raised for the Jeremy Saxe Foundation, which was created in honor of brother Jeremy Saxe ‘09. Its mission is to strengthen education and development in Nepal. The foundation awards educational scholarships to underprivileged children, has built a daycare center so that young mothers can continue their education, and is in the process of building a K-6 Elementary school.

Lastly, DKE would like to extend a special thank you to the Lafayette women’s basketball team, which came out to the tournament in full support. DKE is already looking forward to continuing their status as the team’s SuperFans next season.

DKE hosts Kaleidoscope talk

This afternoon, the Brothers of Delta Kappa Epsilon hosted a Kaleidoscope social justice discussion that was conducted by four Lafayette students, Chris Kelly, Jessica London, Danyelle Smith, and Arielle Reyes.

The Kaleidoscope social justice peer education group “encourages students to take an active role in campus education regarding issues of multiculturalism, equity, and social justice.” These discussions lead to an increased awareness of the diversity that is present all around us in everyday life.

The Brothers listened as the speakers discussed individual identity versus group identity and the difference between power and privilege. The Brothers also engaged in an activity that involved standing up when a particular sentence applied to them. We learned that social justice is both a process and a goal, that different people are affected by different words in different ways, and how to be aware of our prejudices that we may not know exist.

The talk was capped off with a quote by Paulo Freire, a Brazilian theorist – “Washing one’s hands of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless means to side with the powerful, not to be neutral.”

When asked for additional clarification of what this quote means in a few words, Brother John Burke said that indifference is enabling the powerful.

These types of talks are important to facilitate increased awareness both campus wide and worldwide and the Brothers of DKE were extremely excited to be able to engage in an invaluable opportunity.

The Return of the Super Fans

In one of the biggest challenges of the year, the Lafayette Women’s Basketball team hosted the Pittsburg Panthers on Saturday afternoon at the Kirby Sports Center. Knowing that today’s game could ultimately define their season, the Lady Leopards stepped up to the task to defeat the Panthers 68-65.

With all of this in mind, the brothers of Delta Kappa Epsilon united once again to mark the return of the Lafayette Super Fans. From the opening tip to the final buzzer the gentlemen of DKE created the presence of a true home court advantage.

We wish the team congratulations on an extremely impressive victory, and cannot wait for the next opportunity to pack the stands and cheer our team on.

Dekes reach out

The Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon prides itself in not only having a positive relationship within the Lafayette community, but with the city of Easton as well.

That relationship continued to strengthen when the Brothers of DKE made a generous food donation to Safe Harbor in the tough times that Hurricane Sandy brought to the community.

The food assisted the homeless and helped provide Safe Harbor “the tools necessary to aid Easton residents in achieving independence and self-sufficiency.”

Safe Harbor Executive Director Tyler Rogers recently sent a letter to the DKE House to thank the brothers for their kindness and consideration.

DKE victorious in intramural basketball

The brothers of Delta Kappa Epsilon came out victorious in the five-on-five Intramural Basketball Championship. The championship team consisted of Brother Kelley, Leonard, Lederer, Roberts, Spear, Goldstein, Laird, Vorvolakos, McAndrew, Howe, and team elected captain, Marcus.

With an aggressive style of play, the brothers dominated from the opening tip to the final buzzer. Team coach and Brother Jonathan Frederick instituted an aggressive hands on defense that stifled the opposition and lead to multiple transition baskets. With an offensive game plan that focused around quick passes and off-ball movement, the Deke 5 created numerous open looks that lead to many easy baskets.

President Michael Kelley was quoted saying, “this championship is due directly to the hard work and effort our brothers put in, without the hustle and determination this would not be possible. I would like to thank the entire house for coming out and supporting us and helping this championship become a reality.”

This championship marks our third of the semester, with soccer and flag football already in hand. We wish our brothers congratulations on their recent achievement and will look forward to seeing them back in action come their return from winter break.

Homecoming 2012

This weekend the Rho chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon opened its doors to alumni for Homecoming weekend.  The weekend featured a reception prior to the Marquis Founders dinner, the annual brothers meeting, a tailgate prior to the football game, as well as cocktails at the house after the game.  Attendance was spectacular and brothers, young and old, reconnected and bonded over their shared experiences as members of Delta Kappa Epsilon.  To top off the weekend Lafayette came out victorious over the Holy Cross Crusaders! We look forward to continuing this tradition next year!
