The McKelvy Hosts

On Thursday October 28, 2010 the renowned classicist, Professor David Konstan, was featured in this year’s Howard J. Marblestone Memorial lecture with a presentation titled “Torture and Identity: Paganism, Christianity, and Beyond”. In this presentation the Brown/NYU professor focused on the difference between ancient and modern methods of torture and how these methods affected the way that  the relationship between the body and the mind is conceived. Preceding the lecture the McKelvy Scholars hosted the reception outside the Gendebien Room, providing both professors and students with an opportunity to enjoy refreshments and mingle, while getting to ask Professor Konstan any questions that were left unanswered.

Intrigued by the professor’s lecture and his charisma, the McKelvy Scholars hosted a luncheon with David Konstan the following day. Along with Amnesty International and friends, the Mckelvyites indulged in SOGO with the renowned classicist, bombarding him with questions regarding torture and love in the Ancient World, Grad School applications and even life in general. At the end of the day, the students left pleased and inspired by Konstan’s extensive knowledge and his handful of life advice.
