A memorable culture experience I had with someone from a different country occurred for me in highschool. Growing up in a small town in Connecticut, the only people that I really knew were the people from my town. But when highschool came around that totally changed for me. I decided to go play soccer at a boarding school, in Lake Placid, New York. Doing this gave me the ability to play highly competitive soccer all year around while still getting a good education. Something that wasn’t available in a small town like Somers. On my team we had kids representing twenty two different countries. This alone gave me so many different experiences with cultures from certain countries. But the one that was most memorable for me was meeting one of my very good friends who is from Trinidad and Tabago. Before meeting him, I didn’t even know that Trinidad and Tabago existed. Now it’s somewhere that is high up on my travel list.
Since Trinidad and Tabago is an Island in the Caribbean, their style of life is totally different from ours. In America, everyone is always on the go. Whether it comes to restaurants, driving, whatever it is we feel like we have to get it done as fast as possible. While as in the caribbean everyone is a lot more calm in how they do things. They take things one step at a time and they seem to be more stress free. Along with their style of life, their style of food is a lot different as well. Being able to see this and even try this type of food will always be a memorable experience for me. When you’re growing up you get so used to the same style of food because that’s what we eat in our culture. But getting able to have that experience to try something that I never tried before was very memorable. Also being able to play with him gave me the opportunity to see how his style of soccer is different as well. In Trinidad and Tabago they play a lot of street soccer, whereas in the US street soccer isn’t that common. Along with that, their field conditions, due to the constant heat and rain are a lot rougher than the US. Which gives you the realization to just always appreciate what you have.
Ultimately, playing soccer in high school exposed me to a wide range of cultures, but Trinidad & Tobago stands out as being most unforgettable. I was able to recognize the distinctions between our two countries’ ways of life, food styles, and even soccer styles through interacting with my friend from Trinidad and Tobago. So not only have I learned so much about that culture, I also gained a very good friendship from somewhere I would have never thought.

“Experiencia cultural”
Una experiencia cultural memorable que tuve con alguien de un país diferente me ocurrió en la escuela secundaria. Al crecer en un pequeño pueblo de Connecticut, las únicas personas que realmente conocía eran la gente de mi pueblo. Pero cuando llegó la secundaria, eso cambió totalmente para mí. Decidí ir a jugar fútbol a un internado, en Lake Placid, Nueva York. Hacer esto me dio la posibilidad de jugar fútbol altamente competitivo durante todo el año y al mismo tiempo recibir una buena educación. Algo que no estaba disponible en un pueblo pequeño como Somers. En mi equipo teníamos niños que representaban veintidós países diferentes. Esto por sí solo me dio muchas experiencias diferentes con culturas de ciertos países. Pero lo que fue más memorable para mí fue conocer a uno de mis muy buenos amigos que es de Trinidad y Tabago. Antes de conocerlo ni siquiera sabía que existía Trinidad y Tabago. Ahora es un lugar que ocupa un lugar destacado en mi lista de viajes.
Al ser Trinidad y Tabago una isla del Caribe, su estilo de vida es totalmente diferente al nuestro. En Estados Unidos, todo el mundo está siempre en movimiento. Ya sea que se trate de restaurantes, conducir o lo que sea, sentimos que tenemos que hacerlo lo más rápido posible. Mientras que en el Caribe todos están mucho más tranquilos en cómo hacen las cosas. Toman las cosas paso a paso y parecen estar más libres de estrés. Además de su estilo de vida, su estilo de comida también es muy diferente. Poder ver esto e incluso probar este tipo de comida siempre será una experiencia memorable para mí. Cuando creces, te acostumbras al mismo estilo de comida porque eso es lo que comemos en nuestra cultura. Pero poder tener esa experiencia de probar algo que nunca antes había probado fue muy memorable. Además poder jugar con él me dio la oportunidad de ver en qué se diferencia su estilo de fútbol. En Trinidad y Tabago se juega mucho fútbol callejero, mientras que en Estados Unidos el fútbol callejero no es tan común. Además de eso, las condiciones de campo, debido al calor y la lluvia constantes, son mucho más duras que las de Estados Unidos. Lo que te da la comprensión de valorar siempre lo que tienes.
En última instancia, jugar fútbol en la escuela secundaria me expuso a una amplia gama de culturas, pero Trinidad y Tobago se destaca como la más inolvidable. Pude reconocer las distinciones entre las formas de vida, estilos de comida e incluso estilos de fútbol de nuestros dos países al interactuar con mi amigo de Trinidad y Tobago. Así que no sólo aprendí mucho sobre esa cultura, sino que también gané una muy buena amistad de algún lugar que nunca hubiera pensado.
