Monaco – More than Formula 1

When people think of Monaco, the first thing that often comes to mind is the glamorous Formula 1 Grand Prix racing through its narrow streets. But Monaco is so much more than just a racing destination. During my visit, I discovered a tiny principality packed with breathtaking scenery, opulent culture, and a unique charm, though not without its quirks.

Walking along the same streets that host the world’s most prestigious Formula 1 race was surreal. The track winds through the city, past luxury apartments, high-end boutiques, and the famous Fairmont Hairpin turn. I could almost hear the roar of the engines as I stood where legends like Ayrton Senna and Lewis Hamilton have raced. But Monaco’s sports are more than just fast cars, it’s also home to AS Monaco, which at the time was in second place in France’s top league. Their stadium, Stade Louis II, is a modern marvel tucked into this compact city-state and has a gorgeous view of Mount Angel from the stands. I was even lucky enough to catch a game there for only 20€ (cheaper than most drinks there).

Monaco’s geography is nothing short of spectacular. Nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the rugged Alps, the views are postcard-perfect. Just a short drive away is Nice, with its vibrant promenades and azure waters. The mountains surrounding Monaco provide a dramatic backdrop, while the Mediterranean glistens under the sun. Whether you’re lounging by the harbor or hiking up to the Exotic Garden for panoramic views, the natural beauty is unforgettable.

Monaco insists upon itself, it’s unapologetically luxurious. The Casino de Monte-Carlo is the epitome of this, with its grand architecture and high-stakes tables. Even if gambling isn’t your thing, the building is worth admiring, where it could be seen as a palace covered in art, worked on by “countless artists from between 1863 and 1910. Representing the themes of women and nature”(Monte Carlo). Then there are the cars: Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Rolls-Royces line the streets like everyday commuters. The shops are no less extravagant, with brands like Chanel and Louis-Vuitton catering to the elite. And let’s not forget the yachts, Monaco’s harbor is a floating display of wealth, with mega-yachts that look like small palaces.

Monaco is, without a doubt, the most beautiful City I’ve visited in Europe. The blend of natural splendor and man-made luxury is unparalleled. But it’s not without its flaws. The atmosphere can feel exclusive, even snobby at times. The locals and visitors alike exude an air of superiority, and the prices reflect the principality’s elite status. Still, if you can look past the pretentiousness, Monaco offers a one-of-a-kind experience that’s hard to replicate anywhere else.
