Imitation with Common Objects Instructions

Before you begin this activity, you should have set up Zoom Meetings. You can refer to this link for directions.

We’d like you to try the following activity. If your child doesn’t want to do it, that’s ok. You could try coming back to it later in the video chat, or on a different video chat. If you try it a couple times and your child isn’t interested, let us know and we will send you the next activity.

For this activity:

  • The grandparent should look for objects that can be found both at their house and at their grandchild’s house.
  • The parent should help to gather similar objects in their own home.
  • Then, the grandparent will lead silly and playful activities with the objects.
  • They will also ask the grandchild to follow and imitate their activities.
  • The grandchild can play along.

For example, grandparents could put a bowl on their head, ask the grandchild to also put a bowl on their head, and follow the actions of the grandchild putting the bowl on their head.

The picture below shows an example.

In this example, the grandfather put a bowl on his head and asked the granddaughter to put a bowl on her head as well. Then, the grandmother followed the gesture of the granddaughter putting the bowl on her head. It is noticeable that the bowl was the object that was found both at the grandfather’s and the granddaughter’s houses.
