This video goes into a lot of detail regarding what is wrong with the current, modern-day Farm Bill. Most of the topics mentioned we have already discussed in class, however, there were a few interesting facts that were stated that we did not necessarily read about! For example, the government subsidizes Christmas tree farming relatively heavily. It is so interesting to hear about what the government feels needs to be subsidized and what they feel does not need support. Based on these subsidies, we see certain farmers succeeding, while others struggle to make ends meet.

First of all, I’m surprised there was no talk of organics. To me, that is the most important part of the 2014 bill. However, I did find it kind of weird that they chose to illuminate the bill through mention of the weird crops that are being subsidized. Congressmen and women have specialty interests in mind, always. I am not at all surprised that these things were added, and I don’t think any of the panelists were surprised either. The ease with which they deflected mentioning the sushi rice, catfish, and christmas trees definitely demonstrated their “well, duh” opinion on that aspect of the bill. Overall, I think they did highlight some good and bad things in the bill and raised some conversation that the public should really be considering.
