Wiener Ostermärkten

As Easter is recognized as a national holiday in Germany, we had no school for Good Friday and Easter Monday. For this long 4 day weekend I decided to go to Vienna. Vienna celebrates the holiday, much like other European cities, with Ostermärkten, Easter markets in English. Vienna has three different Easter Markets, two in the center of the old city and one at Schloss Shönbrunn. The two markets in the center city are found at Freyung and Am Hof plazas and sell a variety of traditional Austrian foods and Easter related goods like hand painted eggs. The largest of the Easter markets is the one at Shönbrunn palace and features a host of different stands selling food and wares and different attractions. The Market in Freyung is famous for every year having the tradition of building the tallest tower of eggs in Europe with 40 thousand eggs being used. The Shönbrunn market has places for kids to play and a ferris wheel.

I had the opportunity to visit all three of these markets on Easter Monday and while some of the festivities like the egg tower at Freyung was gone, all three of the markets were still very busy with eager customers. While all of the markets had their own unique charm and special feel, I personally really liked the market at Schönbrunn palace because of its sheer size and easy access to the gardens that the palace also hosts. I would definitely recommend visiting the Easter markets in Vienna if you are in the area during Easter, however expect the food to be more expensive than in other parts of the city and make sure to bring something to carry any items you buy as many of the painted eggs are very fragile.
