My First Week in Bonn
Though we hadn’t even taken off yet, I felt as if I had already been transported to Bonn. A chorus of foreign languages surrounded me as I began to wonder what was to come. Because this was my first trip outside of the United States, I couldn’t help but feel a flurry of emotions. I was nervous yet excited to experience all of the new people, places, and opportunities.
Stepping off the place onto the tarmac I immediately felt the cool air rush through my nose. I was instantly reminded of the New Jersey winter air I had experienced just a day prior. The chill air was refreshing. As I took in my surroundings, my nervousness began to fade, and in its place there was a growing sense of excitement for what lay ahead. As we arrived at AIB, I sat patiently as I waited for my host family to arrive. They greeted me with open arms and their warmth and enthusiasm made me feel right at home.
That first evening, my roommate Donovan and I decided to explore our new neighborhood. We wandered the streets and grabbed a bite to eat while soaking in the lively atmosphere. As if on cue, it began to snow as we were leaving the restaurant. It felt like the perfect welcome to our new home.
The next day we received a tour of Bonn and learned a lot about the history of Bonn throughout the years. One thing I didn’t realize was that the gummy bear brand Haribo was founded here. Exploring the city truly felt like another world. The streets, the architecture, and the energy were unlike anything I had ever experienced before. I spent the next few free days with friends exploring the city, going into as many stores as we could. I quickly knew I made the right decision in coming to Bonn and I really look forward to the coming months.
