  1. Your project was great. I personally always get bored by net neutrality but your project did a good job keeping me interested. This is due to the great visuals you had in your project. These really enhance your project and made it easy for someone who is not common with net neutrality to understand what your talking about. The video clip was beneficial in explaining what net neutrality is in a very short amount of time. I also really liked how you used a lot of the information from class in the beginning of your presentation. The last few weeks of class really worked perfectly for your topic in the analysis of how we got to net neutrality. It was really great how you didn’t favor one side or the other when explaining net neutrality. This makes your project better because your not taking sides on the argument just presenting facts. Before, I watched this video I didn’t know that computers used to be run on telephone lines or how much the government is involved in keeping the internet neutral. In conclusion your project was incredibly informative and there are no critiques that i can make. Great Job!

  2. Hi Austin!

Explaining the origins of net neutrality by discussing the impacts of the Cold War and how it was a motivator for technological innovation best exemplified the concepts we have been discussing all semester, especially in recent weeks, and I felt it was a great start to the slidecast and the net neutrality discussion.

You did a great job of using visuals to aid understanding in the technical aspect of how net neutrality came to be, such as the helpful diagram describing packet switching. The clip you used was a powerful and effective way to explain and go into more depth on the logistics of net neutrality to ensure viewers’ understanding.

Your discussion of the implications of net neutrality was very comprehensive, I liked how you were able to speak from both sides and took an informative standpoint on a topic that has been very controversial in recent times.

I noticed that in the beginning it seemed at a point that you were jumping from innovation to innovation that eventually led to net neutrality and could have spent some more time discussing the societal conditions of those times as well.

Overall, you gave a nice comprehensive view of what neutrality is and laid out the possibility for the future given recent political events, such as the actions of Ajit Pai, the new head of the FCC. You had very effective use of visuals, especially showing the different internet packages that helps viewers understand what apps and websites cost companies the most, which is the reason behind eliminating net neutrality. The comprehensive graphic at the end sums everything up very well. As someone who never had a clear understanding of net neutrality and its implications, this objective presentation was very knowledgable and cleared a lot of things up for me. Great job!

  3. This was a very thought-provoking presentation. You told the story very interestingly, in that instead of structuring in context then technological or vice-versa, you told them together. Your contexts were used to describe how the technology worked, and it made the presentation very watchable and informative. This presentation actually clarified some of the technical aspects of the technology for me without exploring in a way that would ultimately end up with me paying
less attention to the technical aspect. You did a really great job at balancing the technical and contextual.

This is also the only time I have heard the other side of the argument regarding net neutrality. You touched on both the freedom of internet and the financial practicality well and that is often a side that college students in particular overlook. You did a great job telling this story about a controversial subject. Your job was to explain the technology, not to make an argument, and you accomplished that perfectly.

Overall, a very well executed and watchable presentation while still very informative.

  4. Similar to David, I also get bored talking about stuff like this. Especially because the last two weeks of classes has been pretty much about a lot about the history of the internet, etc. Despite this, I really enjoyed your slide cast. I think you used the right about of history. I really enjoyed how you described packet switching and why the Cold War played such a huge role in the creation of the internet.

Also, the video you put into your slide cast was extremely appropriate and I think you put it in at the perfect time. because it allowed you to switch more from technical to the relationship between policy makers and users and exactly what net neutrality is in words for everyone to understand.

Overall, this was a really good video with really good images.
