This summer Brother Matthew Soloway ’16 is the workshop coordinator for StreetSquash Newark, a non-profit based in Newark, NJ. The non-profit’s goal is to create well rounded scholar athletes through equal portions of academic tutoring and instructional squash sessions.
The Millburn, NJ native has worked as the leader for a group of middle school-aged children from the Newark area, organizing hour long sessions every day for the kids involved. Soloway has put together three weeks of musical workshops including percussion, instrument making, and banjo making.
“I have taught the kids about rhythm and melody,” Soloway said, “as well as broadened their musical knowledge to encompass jazz and certain subgenres.”
Soloway’s final week will be capped off with a trip to surrounding nature preserves and lessons on soil filtration, as well as scavenger hunts for the children.
Soloway is pursuing a degree in economics at Lafayette and serves as the scholarship chair for DKE.
