The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering Offer a New Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program

As a recipient of the National Science Foundation’s prestigious IGERT (Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship) award, they are charged with establishing new models for graduate education and training. Their goal: to create a collaborative environment in which our research transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. The focus: soft material robotics.

They depend on all kinds of computers but robot assistants don’t walk into our kitchens to help us cook. Current robots work well in factories or on the battlefield but just don’t seem compatible with most human activities. What they need are safe, nimble, and friendly robots for the home and the natural world.

These robots will not look or behave like today’s robots. This vision of soft robots in our homes, hospitals, and offices highlights an urgent need for new approaches to building such devices. Ultimately they expect that machines interacting with living systems will be biocompatible and biodegradable.

WISE Program

Each summer, AIChE brings undergraduate students to Washington, DC, as part of the Washington Internships for Students of Engineering (WISE) program <http://www.wise-intern.org/>.

The WISE program offers a unique opportunity for eligible engineering students to spend a summer in Washington learning how government officials make decisions on complex technological issues and how engineers can contribute to legislative and regulatory policy decisions.

Students meet with leaders in Congress and the Administration, prominent non-governmental organizations, and industry.  Working under the direction of a faculty-member-in-residence, students prepare papers on a current engineering-related public policy issue that is important to their sponsoring society.

Outstanding engineering students who display evidence of leadership skills and have a keen interest in public policy should apply.

Important requirements to consider:

*       Junior or senior undergraduate engineering student or recent graduate beginning Masters level study in technology policy-related degree
*       U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

Under-represented minority students are encouraged to apply.

Dow Chemical

All students interested in 2014 co-op or internship opportunities with Dow should apply to job #1306547 on the Careers@Dow website.  The location for that requisition does show Freeport, however the National Student Program deploys students potentially at all Dow sites in the U.S..  It’s just that University Relations is required to include a location listing on the req, so they arbitrarily chose Freeport this year.
