January 7, 2015: Papallacta to Tambopaxi

As we leave Papallacta, we first visit a massive basalt flow that exhibits columnar jointing. We then continue west to the Guango Lodge, a birding paradise for hummingbirds… however our goal is to find metamorphic rocks from the core of the Andes.

After driving south in the Inter-Andean Valley we eventually turn back west into Cotopaxi National Park.. A brief ways into the Park we stretch our legs on a short hike through the lower Paramo.
