January 14 – Hike up to the summit of Gua Gua Pichincha volcanoe, and mountain bike down!

We were up early this morning for a drive up to the the refuge at 14,000 feet on the side of Gua Gua Pichincha volcano. It was then a short walk up the the rim of the crater, with spectacular views into the breached crater with a volcanic dome as well as up and down the volcanic chain in Ecuador.

After soaking in the spectacular views, we mounted out mountain bikes for a challenging and exhilarating ride all the down the volcano and back to the L’Antigua Lodge where we ate lunch.

We then drove back to Quito for packing in preparation for our departure to the Galapagos the following morning.
