SUBMISSIONS

We accept all forms of writing: poetry and prose, fiction and non-fiction, dream journals and grocery lists. Typically, written work is no longer than 2000 words; longer submissions are welcome, but there is no promise that they will see publication due to printing costs.

Strong writing submissions will do at least one of the following: use words thoughtfully; demonstrate a distinct sensibility or style; convey an affect; create an atmosphere; establish a strong sense of place; contain a character that we might have met in a past life; subvert reader’s expectations with regards to form and/or content.

We accept all forms of visual art, so long as it is well documented. This includes photos and scans of: paintings, drawings, watercolors, sketches, sculptures, photography, digital art, cartoons, doodles, etc…. video art is really the only thing that can’t make it onto the pages of The Marquis. When submitting visual art be sure to include the work’s title, materials, and scale along with documentation of the work itself.

Strong visual arts submissions will do at least one of the following: generate the desire to look at the work for an extended period of time; exhibit proficiency in a given medium;  convey an affect; demonstrate originality in intention and/or execution; engage with the constraints of a given medium.

TO SUBMIT YOUR WORK, EMAIL IT TO: themarquis@lafayette.edu

Submitted work will be anonymized before being reviewed, and the creator of the work will receive comprehensive feedback on their piece, including the comments and reactions from the meeting. Work can be published anonymously on request. Submitting work does not obligate you to attend our weekly meetings, though we would love for you to join us.

Submitted work does not need to be:

  • a final draft.
  • a work of genius.
  • something that you are confident in.
  • recently made.

Submitted work can be:

  • something that you did for class.
  • transgressive, vulgar, explicit, or otherwise offensive to Lafayette’s institutional sensibilities (which is NOT to say hateful).
  • intensely personal.
  • something that you do not identify with.
  • AI generated––so long as that fact is disclosed.

Submitted work must be:

  • the expression of an artistic or aesthetic impulse.

Works of any style, in any medium, by artists of all levels of experience are to be celebrated. We provide an engaged and open-minded forum for the discussion of student work.
