The Course Catalog of Lafayette College describes Advanced Spanish as follows:
Advanced Spanish is an intensive composition course that emphasizes the development of critical and analytical skills in Spanish through the study of Spanish and Latin American literature and film. Designed as a bridge between language development and upper-level civilization, literature, and culture courses, this class focuses on process writing and is generally taken after a student has completed the Intermediate sequence of language study.
In my opinion:
This was by far the hardest Spanish class I have ever had to take in my entire life. I can stress the umpteenth number of times I was in Professor Denise Garlaza Sepúlveda‘s office to receive academic direction and support. With all due respect, my experience with Dr. Sepúlveda has lead me to refer to her at times as la viuda de negro or the black widow because she is beautiful on the inside and out but she is very passionate about her craft and will not let anyone skate by without a thorough understanding of Spanish language. As a result her grading was deadly at times but as she disciplined me in the language she would encourage me and complement me on my passion to learn the Spanish language, despite the obstacles I had to overcome.
In order to show you how intense it got with Professor Sepúlveda I would like for you to see the raw versions of my compositions and the instructor encouraged revisions. For example, I would bring this to Professor Sepúlveda: Rough Draft I and Rough Draft II . After extensive meetings with her and a SPWA or Spanish Writing Associate I would create this: Final Draft I and Final Draft II. My time in Advanced Spanish allowed me to find my creative writing voice and place a priority on understanding the difference between formal and informal Spanish.
