Cultural Events at Lafayette Hillel

Lafayette Hillel is devoted to expanding the cultural diversity and awereness on campus. We participate in awareness events such as Come-Unity Week, United Against Hate Week, Religious Awareness Week, Black History Month, and Women’s History Month. We also invite speakers and performers to lead discussions on current events and issues and take part in the Jewish and Israeli Film Series of the Lehigh Valley.  Every year some of our students travel to Israel on a Birthright trip.

Holocaust Remembrance Week

Every April we observe Holocaust remembrance week by putting together a series of panels, video screenings, discussions, and other events to honor the victims of the Holocaust. These events bring the campus community together and always represent thought provoking ways to remember the lives lost in Nazi Germany.

Social Action Events

Hillel is very committed to giving back to the campus community and the greater Lehigh Valley at large. Last year, our social action team organized “Challah for Hunger”, an afternoon where we baked more than 30 challot to donate to a local homeless shelter, “Make One Take One,” where we had students across campus make a pb&j during lunch to eat, and make an extra to donate, as well as raised money for a variety of local and national organizations dedicated to erasing the stigma surrounding mental illness.

Holiday Celebrations

In addition to our weekly Sabbath services, we observe every major Jewish holiday throughout the school year. We light candles each night of Hanukkah (and make latkes and watch a Hanukkah movie while we’re at it!), hold campus-wide dinners for the High Holidays, host a Havdalah service and discussion or Torah study roughly once a month, and we hold our interfaith Passover Seder every Spring on the first night!
