Open Houses

20 September 2014

This semester’s Global Fair Food Fest was perhaps the most successful thus far – over 100 students from outside Grossman came to enjoy the food, music, and cultural discussion in our 5 suites. Each suite represented a region or country and presented a dish culturally relevant to that country. In the Brazilian suite, students enjoyed chicken and mushroom Stroganoff; in the Indian suite, they gave their tastebuds a workout with mixed vegetable curry; in the Asian suite they at least appreciated that there was more than one pot of fried rice; in the Italian suite, they were able to enjoy a familiar pasta; and in the Hispanic suite, empanadas and tostones. The residents of the house from each region greatly enjoyed teaching other members of the Lafayette community about their cultures and traditions through decorations, music, and language just as much as food. It was a great way to bring people together to learn and have a great time doing so.

The first Grossman House event was a big success with lots of students attending the Cultural Open House. They enjoyed a host of different foods such as the Nepali dumplings (MoMos), rice and chicken, flavored shaved ice, onion tomato and feta cheese salad, general tso’s chicken, rice with beef. The participants enjoyed music from each of the five regions represented and learned games and phrases from the regions represented in each suite. Over seventy people attended the Open House which is fantastic turn out for our first campus event.  Students enjoyed learning the bachata and merengue in the Latin America suite, and learning to speak Chinese in the East Asia suite and playing the traditional Nepali game of Baghchal in the South Asia suite. In Eastern Africa they made colorful Kofes (paper hats) to take home as part of their cultural experience. The residents of the house from each region greatly enjoyed teaching other members of the Lafayette community about their cultures and traditions. It was a great way to bring people together to learn and have a great time doing so.
