Basic project workflow
- Get a mini DV tape (borrow one or buy one from the book store). Do not try recording to a SD card because you will not be able to import it, plus the audio/video quality will be significantly worse.
- Check out from the library a Canon XTi video camera. Make sure the tape is rewound and that the battery is charged or shoot your video with the power cable connected.
- Set the shot. Remember to keep the camera as close to you as possible since the microphone is on the camera. Also, try to keep your faces framed rather tightly in the shot so it’s easy enough to see you. The background of your shot cane add interest, but it shouldn’t be the focus and certainly not distracting.
- Retake parts of the script with the camera continuous running. This way you don’t have to waste time getting to the camera to start and stop the tape.
- When you’re finished recording remove the tape and return the camera.
Moving your work to and from the media server Nemo (applies only to those working in the Mac labs)
You may or may not be able to finish editing your project in one sitting. If you can’t, you will want to save your progress to Nemo, our high capacity media server. Even if you do finish, it’s still a good idea to save your editable project.
Saving your project to Nemo
- Double-click the MediaStudio hard drive from the desktop and click the [Home] house icon from the left menu.
- Mount Nemo, your class’s remote storage space, by going to Go, clicking Connect to Server, and selecting afp://nemo.lafayette.edu.
- Enter your Network ID and password when prompted then select SPAN211.
- Open your Section1 or Section2 then your group folder.
- While leaving this window open, double-click the MediaStudio hard drive from the desktop and click the [Home] house icon from the left menu.
- Open the Movies folder then drag both the iMovie Projects and iMovie Events folders into your your group folder located on Nemo. If you already have a copy saved on Nemo, click [Continue] when prompted to replace the existing copy.
Moving your project from Nemo to a Mac lab machine
- Double-click the MediaStudio hard drive from the desktop and click the [Home] house icon from the left menu.
- Open the Movies folder.
- While leaving this window open, double-click the MediaStudio hard drive from the desktop and click the [Home] house icon from the left menu.
- Mount Nemo, your class’s remote storage space, by going to Go, clicking Connect to Server, and selecting afp://nemo.lafayette.edu.
- Enter your Network ID and password when prompted then select SPAN211.
- Open your Section1 or Section2 then your group folder.
- Drag both the iMovie Projects and iMovie Events folders from your group folder located on Nemo. If you already have a copy saved on Nemo, click [Continue] when prompted to replace the existing copy.
Exporting your movie from iMovie 09
You will need to export your video before posting it to your course site on iTunes U, so once your completely finished editing your project do the following:
- In iMovie 09, click Share from the top menu.
- Select Export Movie.
- Select the Medium format, which should be listed as 640×480.
- Click the [Export] button.
Uploading your exported movie to iTunes U
- Visit http://itunes.lafayette.edu and log in using your Network ID and password. iTunes will open and place you into iTunes U at Lafayette.
- Scroll to the “Course” section and click Spanish courses.
- Click Spanish 211_FA09: Advanced Spanish.
- In the upper-right of your course page, click the Upload and manage files link. This will open a new web page in a browser.
- Click the Add New File link.
- Browse for the file you exported to upload it. Your file will begin to upload automatically.
