New Publication: Competing Photochemical Effects in Aqueous Carbonyl/Ammonium Brown Carbon Systems

Our research group, in collaboration with Galloway Group, has released a new publication in ACS Earth and Space Chemistry. In this work, we present time- and wavelength-resolved UV-visible spectra of a range of aged carbonyl-containing VOC/ammonium sulfate aerosol mimic solutions. While structurally similar to one another, we observe differences in peak wavelength, photochemical rate constants, and prevailing photoformed SOA products.

New Publication: Brown Carbon Formation Potential of the Biacetyl–Ammonium Sulfate Reaction System

The Galloway Group, in conjunction with Woo Group, Griffith Group, and Hendrickson Group at Lafayette, has released a new paper exploring the dark aqueous chemistry of the biacetyl-ammonium sulfate reaction system. Special thanks to Shiqing Ma ’21 for her hard work on calculating kinetic modeling information!

The paper is available in ACS Earth & Space Chemistry.

New Publication: Modeling of Carbonyl/Ammonium Sulfate Aqueous Brown Carbon Chemistry via UV/Vis Spectral Decomposition

A new Woo Group publication has been released in Atmosphere. Based on the EXCEL and Honors Thesis work of Mengjie Fan ’18 and the accompanying work of Shiqing Ma ’21, we explore the usage of Gaussian functions as a means of tracking kinetics in complex dark chemistry systems, where multiple dynamic behaviors can be observed in different timeframes. Thanks to Ziwei Dai ’18 and Nahin Ferdousi ’19 for their contributions to the development of this project!

The article, which is available via open access, can be found here.
