Course Description

This course teaches the fundamentals of engineering design methodology. Students will use engineering design processes to aid them in: recognizing the need for an engineering solution, defining constraints, specifying requirements, and modeling an engineering solution, among other aspects of engineering design. Instructors integrate societal contexts of engineering practice into the projects and examine the implications of engineering solutions.

Module Abstract

Design is the art and science of innovation. Design requires creative problem solving to meet the needs of individuals and societies. Design thinking applies to innovation across the built environment, including the design of products, services, interactive technologies, and experiences. In the last decade, online media and information sharing platforms, like Amazon, Twitter, and Facebook, have grown as import platforms to connect with customers. These platforms can be used to collect information that allows quantifying product favorability, identifying target customers, lead users, and helping new product development and modification processes. Similarly, the engineering design process has benefited from the advancement of technologies like Machine Learning, Virtual, and Augmented Reality. Our focus in this ES101 module is on the integration of data mining techniques and prototyping approaches/tools to help the design process. Moreover, emphasis will be given on how new technologies can be integrated to advance the engineering design process.
