I think it is interesting how the internet uses concepts that far predate it in order to increase security. Coding, or messages that were encrypted until reaching its final destination, was utilized on a world wide scale during World War 2, and similarly, while not trying to hide information from war enemies, it is now used to protect against cyber enemies. The unfortunate drive for advancements in hacking is the invention that causes the necessity, which is better firewall protection of computers, incorporating one of Kranzburg’s laws. I really appreciate the reiteration of the importance of humans in this process,. especially because this slidecast is discussing one of the most robotic technologies to date, the computer and Internet. This slidecast elaborates the major ways (with 2 great questions asked) to discuss technology that we’ve done so throughout this semester. Perhaps the slidecast could have elaborated on whether or not there is a struggle for internet security to keep pace with hackers, or incorporated the controversy that data is never truly safe – as Sean mentioned, there has to be some human interaction in the process, and those who created security software should know how to bypass it. This relevant issue in today’s day and age overall was explained thoroughly with interesting and funny pictures to keep attention focused.

I thought your slidecast was very interesting and I learned a lot. Providing history on the internet and its origins was helpful and interesting. Your explanation of internet security and why we need it was well done. Overall you did a great job including many of the major class themes we have discussed throughout the semester. The inclusion of Kranzberg’s laws was appropriate and helped explain the context of internet security. When talking about technology, we sometimes forget to mention the role that humans play in the growth and development of technology. In lieu of this, focusing on the human aspect of computers and internet security was a great idea. Your discussion on patronage and progress was also well done. I liked the variety of images you used throughout the slidecast and your narration was clear and easy to understand. It would have been nice to include some narration on the first slide to help introduce the topic. Other than that, you did a great job.

You should have had some narration on the first slide or made it shorter, instead of having 20 seconds of no information. I thought that it was interesting how a graduate student unleashing a worm that infected over 6,000 computers and stole information from military networks led to the passage of Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. I learned that the firewall was introduced in the 1980s in order to improve network security. It was good that you pointed out how Kranzberg’s law, “Invention is the mother of necessity” is related to internet security. I liked that you emphasized the importance of people in the internet security challenge. People are involved in all aspects, including malware, code, the internet, hacking, and the prevention of hacking. I thought you did a good job of mentioning the various themes that were covered in class (e.g. determinism). For example, you disagreed with the determinist view by saying that the tactics of network security were developed for specific reasons. You could have inserted some statistics about internet hacking over time or how the quantity of antivirus programs has changed over time. The narration needed to be louder; I could barely hear it.

I thought you did a good job using our class concepts in order to explain internet security. Your presentation also did a good job explaining the ARPANET and DARPA funding (the stuff that we learned in class). I thought you could have explained why people started hacking and what the point of it was. I’m still confused on why hacking started so early because there was no bank info or credit card numbers to be stolen on the network at that point. I really like how you always brought up the human connection and how even though these viruses are pieces of code and the information on the internet isn’t human it was still created by humans and all the information has a human quality. I thought your narration was too quiet as I had to turn up my speakers to max volume to be able to hear what you were saying. Also on some slides you rushed through your narration and it was cut off.

I liked how you included of ton of aspects from class in your slidecast: context, people, determinism, presentism, progress, Kranzberg…NOICE.

With the first Kranzberg slide, it would have been good to have some more elaboration on that example, since it is a relevant example and there was some time left on the slide. I think you had a really nice talking flow and it was easy to follow and understand, neglecting that one hiccup where your narration overlapped itself. Your picture selection was entertaining as well. Although your first title slide could have used a picture or some narration. That was also cool how the internet when first being developed was designed to be a galactic network, like it practically is today. I wish there was a little bit more about developments for the future of internet security, but you did a great job explaining its origins, and that was more important for a history based slidecast.
