The Bushkill Creek is a aquatic paradise for macroinvertebrates, fish and other large aquatic life, and Faculty and students of the Environmental Science program at Lafayette College. In a decade long project led by Dr. Megan Rothenberger ’02, the health of the Bushkill creek has been monitored quarterly by research students. This treasure trove of data has allowed for a greater understanding of the overall health of the creek. In 2024, and 2025, with help from watershed associations, local, state and federal agencies, freshwater mussels have been re-introduced into the creek bed. These mussels are being introduced now that 3 dams on the creek have been removed. It is hoped that with fish now migrating upstream, these mussel populations will be able to thrive in the new habitat, and reproduce and move with the assistance of the migratory fish. Eurnett Christopher ’25, completed a senior thesis on the initial population of mussels to learn about their preferred habitat, and potential migration in the stream channel. Mapping of these mussels through the use of RFID trackers glued to their shells will allow future students to learn more about the habits of freshwater mussels.
