This was great! I really liked that you positioned it as a conversation with your sister who was able to share some of her own experiences as a vegetarian. Even though I’m a vegetarian, I knew very little about Lappe and definitely learned a lot about her values and rationale for righting Diet for a Small Planet (as well as some of the pushback she received after it was published). The clips of Lappe talking were great additions for not only splitting up the talking but also letting the listener into the life of Lappe a little bit more! In terms of suggestions, I would be interested in hearing either any critiques of Lappe herself (which you touched upon a little about the class relations to choosing one’s diet), but I’m wondering if there are other areas or narratives that were left out. I also think it would be interesting to see how Diet for a Small Planet is still impacting our current society or other off-shoots. But I definitely learned a lot and enjoyed listening!
I really enjoyed learning more about Francis Moore Lappe! I did not know much about her work prior to listening to your podcast, except what we talked about in class, so hearing about her philosophy and the role Diet for a Small Planet has played in promoting vegetarianism was really interesting. I liked that you brought your sister into the conversation, it made Lappe’s work really relatable to the listener. One note for improvement would be to pay special attention to the volume levels between clips, I found myself adjusting the volume levels between different speakers (not a ton, but a bit). Overall, I think you did a great job at creating both an engaging and informative podcast!
I really enjoyed this! I only really knew about Lappe from what we discussed and critiqued in class, so increasing my exposure to her life, philosophies, and even her motivation for writing Diet for a Small Planet (“outrage”) was great. The discussion and analysis on Lappe’s use of her food-related popularity to highlight larger social/political issues was very well done and informative as well. I especially enjoyed the conversation with your sister to break up the structure of the podcast and provide a further opinion on the matter, which definitely worked really well in this situation. A little critique is that you might want to try integrating Lappe’s quotes in more seamlessly just so it feels more natural and has less of an essay-like tone; this might also make the podcast have a better flow and seem more realistic. Either way, this was definitely really well done and I loved listening.
