Community Learning

After reading all of the posts from the other student who are conserving energy I don’t know if it’s comforting or scary to me that everyone has very similar challenges as I do.  On one hand it comforts me that I am not alone in experiencing these difficulties. However, on the other had it kind of worries me that these challenges are so common when, especially looking back on in now, they are such trivial and simple challenges. It should not be so very difficult to remember to turn off the lights or unplug your electronic devices. I think that as a society if we could overcome these challenges how much electricity we could save is almost unimaginable.

However even though I was a part of a community now it didn’t take away a lot of the lone wolf feel the entire sustainable behavior challenge has. I still had to remember to unplug my things, which ended up being extra hard after going home for thanksgiving break because I have infinitely more appliances to take care of at my house out in Colorado. I was even asked by my mom why her coffee maker was unplugged every morning and having to explain the entire challenge to her. The Community of “energy savers” did help to show me that I was not the only one who was experiencing the challenges that I was experiencing. But the community, save for one comment about how to remind yourself did not help me with actually doing the sustainable behavior challenge itself. I still had to be the one who unplugged my electronics I sadly couldn’t get anyone else to do it for me, but at this point it isn’t too much of a bother fore me and it is becoming a true habit which I like to think is a very good thing.
