Binding Together to Stop the Waste

Going into this challenge, I expected food waste would be a popular topic. It is a problem we are surrounded by every day and it is something that an individual could easily change. After reading my classmates posts, I was surprised by the amount of differences I saw in the approaches we all took. Of course there were also many similarities. For example, the other members of the food waste community also found it helpful to have a reminder. One student set an alarm, while another put a picture of food waste as his cell phone background, which I thought was a great idea. A constant reminder and motivation. Another student brought up the idea that the more plates one takes, the more food that is wasted. I completely agree with this idea and have touched on it before in my previous posts. This is especially difficult at college when there are many opportunities to waste food.

One difference I noticed between our community is where each of us wastes the most food. I feel I waste the most when I go to Lower and cannot control the proportions. While others prefer that because you can not take more than one plate. Other difference I noticed was the role our friends played in this challenge. I used my friends as a benefit in order to help me stay on track. Others in my food waste group saw this as a set back and noticed a increase in food waste while eating with friends.

It is nice to know that there is a community that sees food waste as a major threat to the environment. I think there is motivation in the fact that others are trying to do this challenge with me. I do not want to let them down, knowing they are making the same sacrifices and I am. Hopefully if as a group are able to influence more people we could actually make a difference in the Lafayette community.
