Investigating the Changing Time
My adopted behavior was considerably less enjoyable this week. I’m having a hard time determining why, but I think it has to do with the recent drop in temperature and the daylight savings time change. I’ve been making a solid effort to maintain my new “lights off fans off” lifestyle routine but I’m having trouble keeping up. It gets darker earlier now and the recent cloudy weather has made it even harder to keep the Christmas lights off during the day. I decided midway through Sunday to turn on a single strip of lights in order to read for homework. I didn’t feel so terrible though because I’ve just started to use my headphones in place of my speakers because of the amount of energy I suspect they use. I enjoyed most of my Friday listening to the new Arcade Fire album in my analog headset.
Unlike the lights, keeping the fans off is no problem whatsoever. The November chill that is settling over campus eliminates the need for a fan. I’ve bundled up and broken out my pea coat (I love my pea coat) so most of the time the fans sit in my room like statues frozen in the blazing memory of summer.
Overall, I don’t think this new sustainable behavior has been too much of a burden to me. I’ve adapted to it quite well. I think I want to challenge myself more. I want to invest in the LED lighting that I talked about in the last post. Maybe I’ll go to Lowe’s this weekend and look for something affordable, energy efficient, and soothing. It’s parents weekend this weekend so I might even be able to get away with convincing my parents to buy me some new lighting. More to come on my upcoming adventure next week…
