ITS Coffee Break for Mon, July 31, 2006

The ITS Coffee Break crew takes a look at the new Parallels virtualization software that allows you to easily run Windows, Linux and other operating system under Mac OS X. Courtney and Ken then launch into a discussion of video blogs, explaining what they are, offering a few technology/web culture/geek centric examples, and speculate on possible roles for vlogs in academia.

Tech news focuses on the trend of corporations attempting to make their own social networking web sites to cash in on the success of MySpace … with less than stellar results. Finally, Help Topics looks at upcoming workshops, including one that focuses on “MySpace and Facebook” and another that looks at what learning objects are available for use by faculty.

    • The e-mail server died last week when it didn't shut down properly during the electrical storm that knocked out power to College Hill.
    • It's running again, but there were problems restoring some accounts. If you're having trouble logging in, have missing folders, or any other e-mail problems, please contact the Help Desk:

    • This month's scheduled outage for network infrastructure maintenance will take place Wednesday, July 19, from approximately 3:00 AM to 7:00 AM. A list of services impacted by this outage will be posted closer to the outage date.

    • The article stated: "6.6 percent of adults said they had downloaded audio podcasts within the last 30 days, and 4 percent had downloaded video podcasts. Since the question has only been recently added to the survey, according to the Nielsen/NetRatings spokeswoman, there is no data available for 2004 to allow for a growth comparison. (Blogging came in even lower at 4.8 percent.)"
    • It further said: "Internet users in the 18-to-24 age group are twice as likely to download audio podcasts than the average online adult. When it comes to video podcasts, however, the 25-to-34 age group downloads the most, and follow a close second for audio downloads, the report said."
